Retired UNLV Professors Fund Undergraduate Scholarships

Darryl and Karen SealeDarryl and Karen Seale want to help students with financial need stay in school.

The retired UNLV professors recently committed to a planned gift of $250,000 to fund student scholarships. In addition to UNLV, they’ve committed financial gifts to their alma maters.

Between them, the Seales have earned seven degrees from five universities. Their giving is deeply rooted in their personal experiences.

“Like many, we spent much of our 20s either in college or working to save money for college,” Darryl said. “As recipients of student loans, grants, and other financial aid, we’ve been grateful for the career opportunities and life experiences these gave us, and would like to do what we can to afford others similar opportunities and experiences.”

Karen worked as a therapist for 25 years and earned her master’s in education from UNLV; she taught for more than a decade in education, business, and public health before retiring in 2019.

Darryl retired in 2023 as a Professor Emeritus; he taught management at UNLV for 23 years in the business school, receiving a Beam Research Fellowship and UNLV Teaching Fellow.

He earned his MBA at Penn State, where Karen earned her bachelor’s, and earned his master’s and doctorate from the University of Arizona. He attended California State University, Chico, as an undergraduate.

“I could not have gotten through Penn State without a graduate assistantship,” Darryl says. “So, we’re most interested in giving to people who it makes a difference to, as to whether they would stay in school.”

“That was important,” Karen added. “When I went back to school it meant so much to me.”

They don’t have children, so they decided to leave money to their godchildren and colleges. “We never had any regrets after we signed the paperwork,” Darryl said. “We felt good.”
